PREVIEW: The Border

Dortmunder U | 6th Floor | 11/25/2017 - 04/08/2018

Opening: Friday, 24 November 2017

Where does Asia begin, where does Europe end? Where does Asia end, where does Europe begin? The exhibition The Border explores and reflects on borders of various kinds: as territorial inclusion or exclusion, as cultural or social dividing line, as an instrument to distinguish between “us” and “them”. The geographical and cultural border between Europe and Asia is the topical thread running through the exhibition. The project approaches this topic from an artistic standpoint and directs its gaze beyond a purely political and economic perspective to include a cultural, artistic, personal or even humoristic dimension.  A younger generation of artists has been commissioned to create new artworks and will present their reflections and insights in a traveling exhibition in Eastern Europe, Russia, Central Asia, and Germany, accompanied by local symposia/workshops with local actors and German partners.

With works by Umida Achmedova & Oleg Karpov (Taschkent, Usbekistan), Alisa Berger (Köln, Deutschland), Aytegin Djumailiev (Bischkek, Kirgisien), Natalya Dyu (Almaty, Kasachstan), Saule Dyussenbina (Almaty, Kasachstan), Farhad Farzaliyev (Baku,Aserbaidschan), Hamlet Hovsepian (Ashnak, Armenien), Katya Isaeva (Moskau, Russland), Olga Jitlina (Sankt Petersburg, Russland), Anton Karmanov (Nowosibirsk, Russland), Alina Kopytsa (Kiew, Ukraine), Gaisha Madanova (Almaty, Kasachstan / München, Deutschland), Taus Makhacheva (Moskau, Russland), Eleonore de Montesquiou (Berlin, Deutschland), Stanislaw Mucha (Berlin, Deutschland), Marat Raiymkulov (Bischkek, Kirgisien), Alla Rumyantseva & Alexey Rumyantsev (Duschanbe, Tadschikistan), Sergey Shabohin (Minsk, Belarus), Sophia Tabatadze, Nadia Tsulukidze «Khinkali Juice» (Tiflis, Georgien), Alexander Ugay (Almaty, Kasachstan), Viron Erol Vert (Berlin, Deutschland), Where Dogs Run (Jekatarinburg, Russland), Anastasiia Zhyvkova (Kiev, Ukraine)
