2006
In 2006 the activities of HMKV increased in size and velocity: The year kicked off with a grandiose cooperation project between HMKV, Zagreb Cultural Kapital of Europe 3000 and relations, wittily entitled Peripherie 3000. It was the first project in the Ruhr area to deal with the Cultural Capital of Europe 2010 only one day after the announcement that Essen & the Ruhr area would be Cultural Capital of Europe in 2010. This year saw no less than four international media art exhibitions dealing with Glamour and Globalization, Soccer, Media art from the Baltic States, and the artists’ collectives UBERMORGEN and irational. In the context of these exhibitions, HMKV organized performances, workshops (one of them dealing with RFID technology that’s being developed in Dortmund), talks, video screenings, and a series of electronic music events. HMKV hosted the 3rd International Recorder Race (www.rekorderrennen.de) which proved to be an amazingly popular event with almost forty ingenious racing teams (and about six TV crews) participating. It is said that for many people the Irational Action Weekend – consisting, amongst others, of free climbing tours through the inner city of Dortmund – turned out to be the secret highlight of the year.

2003 - 2004
After two years of continuously using the spaces in Guentherstr., the
projects of the Hartware MedienKunstVerein – in the framework of the
medien_kunst_netz dortmund – are taking place again in various
locations. For example, Hartware conceived, curated and realised the
exhibition Muntadas. On Translation: Das Museum for the Museum am
Ostwall. The international conference 404 Object Not Found dealing with
the problems of conserving media art took place in the Westfälisches
Industriemuseum Zeche Zollern II/IV in Dortmund.
Since October
2003 Hartware uses the PhoenixHalle measuring 2200 sqm – the former
spare parts storage on the area of Phoenix West, a former steel mill in
Dortmund-Hörde.
In 2003 and 2004 the exhibitions Games.
Computerspiele von KünstlerInnen (2003), so wie die dinge liegen and
the Nam June Paik Award (both 2004) took place here.

2001 - 2002
In 2001 and 2002 Hartware mainly used the 400 sqm large space of the
Center for Music and Culture of Dortmund located in Guentherstr. 65. An
annual program was conceived which included exhibitions, film and video
programs, conferences and workshops for teenagers.
External
curators, networks like the serverfestival and associations like MeX
(association for intermedia and experimental music) were invited to
present their projects.
Beyond that, students of the
University of Applied Sciences (FH) and the University of Dortmund were
invited to use the space for presenting their diploma works.
Parallel to the annual program in Guentherstr. Hartware curated several exhibitions in Duisburg, Amsterdam and Copenhague.
In cooperation with the artist Daniel Garcìa Andùjar Hartware MedienKunstVerein initiated the net art platform art.net.dortmund.de in 2001 which was commissioned by the city of Dortmund.
Another network which was co-founded by Hartware in 2001 is the Medienwerk NRW which consists of several NRW-based institutions dealing with media art and cultures.
On the local level the medien_kunst_netz dortmund was formed in 2001,
which consists of the Hartware MedienKunstVerein, the Museum am
Ostwall, the Cultural Office of the City of Dortmund and the University
of Dortmund. The aim of this network is to strengthen the structures
for media art in Dortmund.

1998-2000
In 1998 Hartware MedienKunstVerein organised and curated the much
acclaimed international media art exhibition Reservate der Sehnsucht in
the so-called „U“ – the former Union brewery in Dortmund. Until 2000
the exhibitions and events organised by the Hartware MedienKunstVerein
took place in different locations, such as the German Museum for
Occupational Safety (DASA), the abandoned Union brewery or empty
buildings in the center of Dortmund.

1996
The hartware medien kunst verein (since 2005: Hartware
MedienKunstVerein) was founded in Dortmund/Germany in 1996 by the
curators Iris Dressler and Hans D. Christ.
Hartware is conceived as an open platform for the production,
presentation, and the discourse of contemporary art, and especially
media art.
Hartware works in regional as well as international networks and
organises exhibitions, film and video screenings as well as workshops
and conferences. The association also supports the production of new
works. In addition to this, since the year 2000 Hartware organises the
grant for women media artists from North Rhine Westfalia, initiated by
the Ministry for Urban Development, Housing, Culture and Sport of North
Rhine-Westfalia.
The curatorial activities of Hartware MedienKunstVerein are focused on
international group exhibitions which deal with different topics of
media art. The intersections between media art and other forms of
contemporary art production play an essential role in this context.
