Frost / Nixon
USA 2008 - Director: Ron Howard - Written: Peter Morgan - Music: Hans Zimmer - With: Frank Langella, Michael Sheen, Kevin Bacon, Sam Rockwell, Oliver Platt - 122 min. - OmU - FSK from 6.

As thrilling as a thriller, this film depicts the preparations and the sensational television interview of British talk show host David Frost (Michael Sheen), who challenged US President Richard Nixon (Frank Langella), who had resigned from office, to a TV duel in 1977. Staged like a boxing match with words, the tension increases from round to round: the four-day interview follows a precise dramaturgy. At the beginning, Nixon scores points seemingly effortlessly over the supposed talk show host lightweight. Then Frost turns up the heat: sharp questions about the senseless prolongation of the Vietnam War; about the bombing of Cambodia, which was absolutely unacceptable under international law; about the break-in at the opposing party's headquarters in the Watergate Hotel. Nixon finds himself in need of an explanation and finally throws in the towel. In the end, he confesses: "The American people ... I have betrayed them ... I have betrayed the country ..."

But Frost / Nixon does not get carried away with simple-minded triumphal poses. Nixon is not portrayed as a figure worthy of condemnation, but as a complex person who failed to fulfil the demands of office. This ambivalence is the greatest quality of Frost / Nixon, whose insights into the psyche of a power politician offer interesting parallels to the present day.

The originally announced film Code: unknown unfortunately has to be cancelled!
