Within the framework of the exhibition HIS MASTER'S VOICE: On Voice and Language, the HMKV presents two performances by Swedish artist Erik Bünger.
The Empire Never Ended (2013)
A mysterious recording from 1948: a man speaking in tongues. His trance-like sermon could not be assigned to a known language until today. Erik Bünger translated this sermon into a musical score. Solo cellist Jan-Filip Tupa follows the uncontrolled voice using the score and creates a fascinating soundscape between musical precision and rapture.
The Third Man (2010, in English with german subtitles)
Erik Bünger invites his audience to accompany him on a journey through the world of popular music. In an associative speech performance, he goes on a search for traces of film themes, pop songs and catchy tunes. These melodies often become anchored in our memory in our childhood and colonize our cultural memory like a virus.

The Empire Never Ended was originally written for Ensemble Modern and commissioned by the BHF-Bank-Stiftung for Frankfurter Positionen 2013. The piece is based on the recording ‘Banta Trance Speech’ found on the CD release: Occult Voices – Paranormal Music, Recordings of unseen Intelligences 1905 – 2007 published by Thomas Knoefel und Andreas Fischer, Cologne, 2007.
