This introduction to the video installation The Teachers by Elizabeth Price (on view in the HMKV exhibition Holding Pattern) weaves together the different threads that make up this complex video installation, such as textiles, satire and the problem of the neo-liberalisation of academic language.

This talk looks at the relationship between Philipsz’s art and different kinds of filmic genres and style, from technicolour feature film to experimental avant-garde. How does the sound-image relation in cinema unfold in Susan Philipsz’s installations? Cinema as a source of ideas and inspiration can be seen as a red thread that deeply informs Philipsz’s work.

Maxa Zoller
Dr. Maxa Zoller has been the artistic director of the Internationales Frauen Film Fest Dortmund+Köln since 2018. She taught experimental film in Cairo and London for many years and has curated film screenings for Tate Modern and Art Basel, among others. Her work with the independent film space no.w.here in London's East End, which further developed the tradition of the London Filmmakers' Co-op, was particularly formative.
