HMKV Video of the Month

On view 1 – 29 Februrary 2020

AIR (Bubble Sculpture Performance) features a video dance performance in a balloon suit. The ecstatic and excessive performance is obstructed by the volume of the balloons. By struggling with the material, the movement is being reduced to its essence – and the dance takes on a ritual, trance-like character.

Neither does the dance follow a choreography, nor are there rehearsed gestures. Everything is improvisation. In some shots the performer "fights" with the balloon suit and looks like an animal being chased. In other moments she appears like an East Asian warrior or a Godzilla-like monster. The sound level is introduced by a heartbeat that seems to come from inside the body. As it progresses, a sound cluster of samples, instrument and voice recordings develops. Rhythms, sound artefacts, everyday noises are woven into a complex structure. The movements of the performer serve as a score for the sound composition. (MvR/IA)
